Diamond Care

Although diamonds are the hardest substance on earth, an extremely hard blow to the girdle can cause a diamond to chip. By having your diamonds set in a relatively secure setting, and being careful with them on your finger, you can keep your diamonds intact for a lifetime. Once or twice a year, it is advisable to have your diamonds cleaned and your settings checked by a reliable organization.

Cleaning Your Diamonds

Diamonds attract grease. Daily exposure to perspiration, chlorine, hairspray, perfumes and especially lotions, can cause buildup that dulls the surface of a diamond. We suggest periodically cleaning your diamonds to keep them brilliant and full of fire.

If cleaning diamond jewelry at home, a solution of one part “Mr. Clean” (available at most major supermarkets) and eight parts warm water can be used to clean diamond jewelry at home. (Not recommended for pearl or emerald jewelry). Soak diamond jewelry in this solution for a few minutes. Take out jewelry and gently scrub with a SOFT toothbrush, loosening dirt and grease. Rinse with warm water and let air dry. Your diamonds will look more brilliant.

Storing Your Diamond Jewelry

We recommend diamond jewelry be stored individually in soft cloth pouches when not being worn to prevent the diamonds from scratching other pieces of jewelry.

Diamond Education - THE 4Cs OF A DIAMOND

Light is the element that ignites a diamond’s fire and brilliance. Its interplay with each of the 4Cs will show why one diamond can sparkle more than another. The 4Cs are used throughout the world to classify the rarity of diamonds.

1. Diamond Cut

The cut or “make” of a diamond has the most effect on its fire, sparkle and brilliance. Even if a diamond has perfect clarity and color, a poor cut can make a diamond look dull.

The “Ideal” cut diamond is a round brilliant cut diamond that has been cut to exact and mathematically proven proportions by a master cutter. Its symmetry, with 58 exactly placed facets, produces the ultimate in luster and beauty.

2. Diamond Color

Diamonds with very little color are the most desirable and priced accordingly. Even traces of color can diminish a diamond’s brilliance.

3. Diamond Clarity

Diamonds with few inclusions (flaws) are very rare and highly valued. Clarity is graded based on the number, location, size and type of the inclusions found in a diamond.

4. Diamond Carat Weight

The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. Five carats is equal to one gram. One carat is equal to 1/5 gram. One carat is also equal to 100 points. (In compliance with industry standards and FTC regulations, Nirvana Treasures states that the total carat weight in our jewels may vary by 0.005 carats from stated weight).

Since larger diamonds are more rare than smaller diamonds, diamond prices rise exponentially with carat weight. In other words, a 4-carat diamond will always cost more than two 2-carat diamonds of the same quality.
